A medical mission from Changhua Christian Hospital visited Papua New Guinea (PNG) from July 9 to 20. The team offered clinical services and health education programs at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and Madang Provincial Health Authority. They were led by Nina Kao, CEO of the CCH Overseas Medical Mission Center. The group included doctors from the neurosurgery, cardiology, orthopedics, and ENT departments, as well as a dietician and administrators.
On July 16, CCH orthopediatrician Dr. Chiang and local physician Dr. Kune performed the first total hip replacement surgery in PNG. The patient, a 73-year-old man, had suffered from a left femoral neck fracture for over six months. After the successful operation the patient recovered well. Follow-up technical support, nursing training, and clinical cooperation is being provided by the CCH team. The partnership is building the foundation for orthopedic skills transfer.
In response to the prevalence of diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases in PNG, the team held a nutrition seminar at the PMGH. At the well-received event, dietitian Tiffany Hsueh gave practical dietary guidance tailored to different conditions and distributed educational materials.
The mission introduced key medical procedures to PNG and further solidified cooperation between the CCH and local health institutions. The CCH will continue to promote technology transfer, clinical practice, and training to assist PNG in health capacity building. The initiative is a concrete example of Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing global health.
