The Ministry of Interior National Park Service, in collaboration with Kaohsiung City government, held a 2025 Wetland Day Jan. 11 in the southern city to herald upcoming World Wetlands Day Feb. 2.
The event attracted over 100 participants from local and national government departments, civil conservation groups, and university and high school students, the MOI said.
Speaking at the event, MOI Minister Liu Shyh-fang said that one year after its establishment, for the first time the NPS hosted the annual meeting of the international body, Society of Wetland Scientists last November, adding that at the end of 2024, it also unveiled a conservation project for a major national wetland in the northern county of Hsinchu, enhancing awareness of the importance of wetland ecology.
Wetlands are important resources that host biodiversity in flora and fauna, store and purify water and act as carbon sinks. Their continued existence is vital to tackling the impact of climate change, Liu noted.
During the event, attendees gained insight into public and private collaboration to enable pheasant-tailed jacanas to live and breed in a Kaohsiung wetland. The minister expressed gratitude to KCG, Wetlands Taiwan in the southern city of Tainan and other organizations for commitment to wetland conservation.
The NPS will continue to implement scientific research and environmental education about wetlands to make informed decisions on conservation and raise public knowledge of their importance, Liu concluded.
