President Tsai visited Education CoLab on March 2, 2021. On her visiting, President Ing-Wen Tsai recognized the lab members for bridging the long-standing urban-rural gap in education and social development which has been most difficult to mend. Through their concerted efforts, the president sees that the education opportunities now in the rural areas not only can keep up but are also comparable with or even better than those of the urban areas. She thanked the lab for finding an answer for the government and bringing quality, fair, and lifelong learning educational opportunities and goals to all of society. The president added, the government will do whatever it takes to constantly extend and optimize this pathway.

As the first NGO offices for education innovation in Taiwan, Education CoLab is formed by three non-profit organizations (NPOs): “Teach for Taiwan Education Foundation, TFT”, “Junyi Academy”, and “KIPP Inspired Schools in Taiwan, KIST”. On arriving at the lab, the president first visited its office area and listened to the presentation “The 3+1 Education Innovation Through Public-Private Partnership”.

In her conversion and interaction with Chairperson An-Ting Liu of TFT, Chairperson Ray Lu of Junyi Academy, and Executive Director Ming-Chu Wu of KIST, the president said that she was worried that it was not an easy way on her first meeting with Liu, and she was glad to see Liu could forget about everything and press on towards the goal.

Then, President Tsai congratulated everyone for their combined efforts. Now that this pathway has gradually become a path, it will certainly turn into a road that is easier and more comfortable to travel. However, she also reminded, “Never forget to find new ways because this road is easy and comfortable to travel. I hope every Taiwanese can hold this courage.”

The president pointed out, quick reproduction of a successful experience is the biggest challenge in public policies. She hopes that everyone can discuss more with the government to reach out to each and every child in different parts of both the rural and the urban areas. However, upholding the “original intent” and “quality” is the most essential part in quick reproduction. Upholding the “original intent” is particularly the most difficult for teachers. She hopes that more young people can join the lab.

Lastly, the president said this also provides a model and a pathway for bilingual education. Besides English, Mathematics, History, and Geography are equally important, and how to quantify them is the key. This is the common challenge to all. The president hopes that all citizens can keep supporting the government. If assistance is required in the operation and process in the future, the government will always be there. The president is glad to partner with NPOs and are happy to see that their efforts have eventually borne fruit.
