Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in late February, Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH) has not only hosted ten online video seminars to share experience about the prevention with the ASEAN countries but also donated medical materials and equipment to countries such as Laos and Myanmar to build it capacity and improve the quality of healthcare service. CCH had donated a 40-ft container to Louangnamtha Provincial Hospital in Laos in mid-March. In early June, CCH once again cooperated with Global Medical Instruments Support & Service Program (GIMISS), and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Myanmar to donate medical supplies in a 40-ft container, including patient transfer beds, hospital trolleys, etc., to Mawlamyine Christian Leprosy Hospital (MCLH), who is supported by The Leprosy Mission Myanmar (TLMM), for enhancing the hospital capacity and healthcare quality. The container arrived at the hospital on July 24th. Both Charles C. Li, the representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Myanmar, and Dr. Zaw Moe Aung, TLM’s executive director in Myanmar witnessed the donation signature ceremony on July 28th.

The Leprosy Mission (TLM) was founded in India in 1874 by British missionary Wellesley Bailey and his wife Alice. It aims to help poor Indians be treated from leprosy and avoid discrimination. TLM is currently headquartered in the United Kingdom and has 30 branches worldwide, 40% of funding for projects comes from the fundraising offered by the British Association. TLMM is one of the TLM branches. The founder, Dr. Zaw, is committed to assisting the MCLH, helping patients be in treatments, use prosthetic limbs, rehabilitation and psychological consultation, etc. The patients will be stigma-free and their lives may return to normal sooner. The hospital was founded by Ms. Susan Haswell in 1898 with the vision to build and sustain the organizational and technical capacity to empower and assist persons affected by leprosy, disability, and other significant stigmatizing diseases. With the support of TLMM, the MCLH can provide free but quality medical care to people in Myanmar. Bridged by Charles C. Li, the representative of TECO in Myanmar, CCH can strengthen the partnership with TLMM for further cooperation, including medical service and medical personnel training while the pandemic turns stable.

Myanmar, a country in Southeast Asia, with a mysterious but unique cultural atmosphere. The healthcare coverage system in Myanmar is insufficient to care for the poor particularly in remote areas. However, medical care knows no borders, Changhua Christian Hospital has been dispatching the medical team to Myanmar since 2013 and providing the medical personnel training as well. Where there is CCH, there is love.
